Birdon Group Wins Award for Eco-Friendly Ship Recycling
Birdon Group received recognition for their innovative approach to dismantling old ships. The Asset Management Council of Australasia awarded them the Asset Management Sustainability Award for their work on the ex-HMAS Sirius Deconstruction & Recycling Project.
This award highlights outstanding achievements in managing assets sustainably. It focuses on projects that align with the UN’s goals for a healthy planet.
Birdon’s project marked a turning point in how to handle old ships in an eco-friendly way. They were the first to use environmentally safe methods to take apart Australia’s biggest ship, the former HMAS Sirius, a retired naval refueling vessel.
An impressive 99.13% of the materials from the ship were recovered and reused. This accomplishment showcases Birdon’s commitment to protecting the environment and sets a new standard for the whole industry.
The successful dismantling of the ex-HMAS Sirius, which took place at the Australian Marine Complex in Western Australia, involved teamwork between Birdon and the Department of Defence’s Capability Acquisition and Sustainment Group (CASG).
Trent Raines, who manages disposals at Birdon, highlighted the collaborative effort behind this win. He said, “This award is a recognition of our team’s hard work and dedication, along with the support of CASG. Together, we’re promoting greener and more sustainable ways to manage assets.”
