India Boosts Naval Presence in Response to Recent Maritime Incidents
In a proactive move to safeguard its maritime interests, the Indian Navy has decided to deploy guided missile destroyer ships in the Arabian Sea. This decision comes in the aftermath of an incident involving an Israel-affiliated merchant vessel, MV Chem Pluto, which was reportedly struck off the Indian coast over the weekend. The navy is currently investigating the nature of the attack, with initial reports suggesting the possibility of a drone strike, as stated in an official navy release.
According to the navy statement, further forensic and technical analysis will be conducted to determine the specifics of the attack, including the type and amount of explosive used. The incident has raised concerns about the security of sea lanes in the Indian Ocean region, prompting India’s commitment to ensuring the safety and security of maritime trade routes, as highlighted by the defense minister during a press conference on Tuesday.

“India plays the role of a net security provider in the entire Indian Ocean region. We will ensure that maritime trade in this region rises from the sea to the heights of the sky,” asserted Defense Minister Rajnath Singh at the commissioning ceremony of a new guided missile destroyer ship in Mumbai.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government is taking the recent attacks seriously. The drone strike on MV Chem Pluto and an earlier attack on the commercial crude oil vessel MV Sai Baba in the Red Sea have prompted increased vigilance from the Indian Navy. “The Indian Navy has increased its surveillance of the seas. We shall find whoever is responsible for this attack, and strict action will be taken against them,” affirmed Singh.
Despite a claim by the U.S. Pentagon attributing the attack to Iran, Iran’s foreign ministry dismissed the accusation on Monday, deeming it “baseless.” The incident occurred in the Indian Ocean, and the U.S.-led task force, currently addressing challenges in the Red Sea, has intensified efforts to counter such maritime threats.
In response to the recent surge in maritime security concerns, the Indian Navy has strategically deployed Guided Missile Destroyers, including INS Mormugao, INS Kochi, and INS Kolkata, in various areas of the Arabian Sea. The primary objective is to maintain a deterrent presence and strengthen surveillance capabilities, ensuring swift responses to potential threats.
It is crucial to note that the attacked vessel, MV Chem Pluto, had a crew consisting of 21 Indians and one Vietnamese citizen. The safety and well-being of the crew are of paramount importance to India, emphasizing the nation’s commitment to safeguarding its maritime interests and protecting international trade routes in the region.

“The Indian Navy has increased its surveillance of the seas. We shall find whoever is responsbible for this attack and strict action will be taken against them,” he said. “Considering the recent spate of attacks in the Arabian Sea, Indian Navy has deployed Guided Missile Destroyers, INS Mormugao, INS Kochi and INS Kolkata …in various areas to maintain a deterrent presence,” the navy statement said.
In conclusion, India’s decision to deploy guided missile destroyer ships in the Arabian Sea reflects a proactive and robust approach to maritime security challenges. The nation’s commitment to being a net security provider in the Indian Ocean region underscores its dedication to ensuring the safety of sea lanes and fostering a secure environment for maritime trade. As investigations unfold, the international community will closely monitor developments, with a focus on collaborative efforts to address and prevent future maritime incidents in the strategically significant Arabian Sea.
